Government of Ireland International Education Scholarships (GOI-IES)

Ireland offers one of the most generous scholarships for international students through the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarships (GOI-IES). This program supports high-calibre applicants from outside the EU/EEA, Switzerland, and the UK. It helps them pursue one year of full-time postgraduate study at master’s (NFQ level 9) or PhD (NFQ level 10) level in Ireland. Approximately 60 scholarships are awarded annually. The funding is provided by the Government of Ireland, managed by the Higher Education Authority (HEA), and delivered in partnership with Irish universities and colleges.

This scholarship stands out because it removes major financial barriers. You get a solid stipend plus a complete tuition waiver from your host institution. It lets you focus on studies, research, and building a global network instead of worrying about costs. Ireland is known for excellent teaching, innovative research, and a welcoming environment. Cities like Dublin, Cork, Galway, and Limerick offer vibrant student life with strong career links in tech, pharma, finance, and sustainability.

Applications for the 2026/27 academic year are open now. The deadline is fast approaching, so start preparing today.

What the GOI-IES Scholarship Covers

The package is straightforward and comprehensive:

  • A €10,000 stipend for one full academic year to help with living costs like rent, food, transport, and books.
  • Full tuition fee waiver from your chosen Irish higher education institution for the scholarship year.
  • No additional insurance or travel grants are included in the core award, but many universities offer extra support for these.

The scholarship lasts one year. Most master’s programs in Ireland are one year long, making this a perfect fit. PhD students can use it in their first year while seeking further funding.
